Networking in the News

2 06 2009

Last week, I had planned to write a quick post to help spread the word about a networking event between Seattle’s PSAMA & Ad Club groups. But, since that ship has sailed (and was a huge success with over 200 attendees), and I’ve been inundated with on-line info regarding why you most definitely should bother with networking, I decided to go ahead and share some links here anyway.

Enjoy this great content and do let me know if you follow any of this advice.

“Network! Network! Network!”

“Networking generates ideas and makes whatever you are doing richer.”

feel good about your networking?

22 06 2007

Learned about this event at a cooking demonstration I attended last night….here’s something that will make you feel really good about staying out on a “school night.” Plus, it could be a great opportunity to meet some new PIF (pay it forward) kind of people:

Restaurant To Help Cover Expenses for Victim’s Hospital and Rehabilitation

SEATTLE (June 21, 2007) Serafina Osteria & Enoteca will host a fundraising event to cover expenses for Miles Thomas, the 23-year-old bartender who was shot by an armed robber early Wednesday morning, June 6th. Thomas was released from Harborview Hospital June 8th and is recovering at home.

The outpouring of support for Miles from the Seattle community has been remarkable. Within the hospitality industry, countless individuals and businesses have extended themselves to support Serafina’s fundraising efforts on Miles’ behalf.

Serafina will open its doors for all-day dining and fundraising Thursday June 28th. Hours of operation:

Lunch: 11 am – 2:30 pm

Happy Hour: 2:30 – 6 pm

Dinner: 5 – 10:30 pm

Late Night Dining: 10:30 pm – 12:30 am

In addition, the restaurant will host a silent auction at the 2043 Eastlake Avenue East location. Silent auction items will be presented for viewing on the Serafina website at, beginning Saturday, June 23rd. Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward sustaining Miles throughout his recovery process.

Donated silent auction items include:

  • Dinner for Eight featuring a menu with wine pairings created and prepared by Executive Chef John Neumark on the terrace of Serafina’s kitchen garden located at the home of owner Susan Kaufman.
  • Scenic Flight for Two, donated by Seattle Seaplanes.
  • Cruise for 10 from Lake Union to the Ballard Locks aboard the “Fandango,” (a 33-foot, 1947 Chris Craft); including Miles Thomas as a guest and light dinner with beer and wine. Wednesday July 18th: 6:30 – 10:00pm
  • Caviar and Champagne tasting for six
  • “Date” with Miles Thomas after his complete recovery!
  • Five VIP passes to Seattle Art Museum

Silent auction items have been generously donated by our customers, business partners, members of the local hospitality and entertainment community, as well as staff members past and present. Silent auction bidding will occur from 5pm to 10pm Thursday, June 28th at the offices of our neighbors Hoshide and Williams Architects, and Michael Courtney Design, (directly across from Serafina’s courtyard patio). Most food products and beverages served over the course of the fundraiser have been generously donated by our purveyors.

Wine Director John Neumark has procured a stunning array of donated wines that will be featured in a special wine list in Miles’ honor. In addition, other neighborhood restaurants and bars have agreed to donate tips and the purchase of a signature drink from proceeds that same evening to the fund. Local businesses and patrons are being asked to donate items for the auction. Participating restaurants and bars, along with items for the auction will be posted on the restaurant’s website at

“I went to Sandy for consultation on career and business matters and got more great advice from her in two hours than most people could give in a month. Sandy is very savvy with knowing how to effectively network and use numerous digital and social media platforms to full advantage. She also gave me encouragement and suggestions in pursuing my passion for photography. I now have a beautiful website that features my photos as well as some great advice on how to market them.”
-Heather R.

“Sandy is simply a networking rock star. She has a gift to help each person on their hunt on an individual level and does not do a one size fits all approach whatsoever. She not only gave me terrific advice (which I used) but helped me chose the right job and even followed through after to make sure I was happy. There are few people out there like Sandy. If you are searching for a job or looking to make a change, she will help you get to the right job for you.”

Effective Networking Training

I share my hard-earned professional insights on effective networking via webinars, webcasts, one-on-one coaching sessions, panel participation, speaking engagements,  workshops, and by facilitating in-person networking events called Pay It Forward Parties. My popular webinar content includes easy-to-remember tactics that will help participants develop their networking muscle and can be applied to making connections of quality.

“Sandy conducted a webinar called the “12 Rules of Effective Networking” for us. We have an extremely tough audience on our webinars-not super easy to please and she absolutely wowed them with her presentation. She got all  ‘outstandings’ on her audience evaluation and she’s super easy to work with on top of it.

“Sandy provided an excellent presentation on LinkedIn for the Center for Career & Calling’s Major & Career Exploration class consisting of 43 freshman & sophomore students at Seattle Pacific University. She engaged the students and tailored her presentation to their level and familiarity with social networking mediums. She gave very specific examples that allowed students to easlily understand the many benefits of using LinkedIn for networking and job search. The results were outstanding; every student completed their assignment to create a LinkedIn profile for the next class session.
